Resumen

Intramammary infections cause significant undesirable consequences in dairy sheep herds, such as the loss of milk production. Somatic cell count in milk tank is a good indicator of the mammary health condition of the flock and this count is usually used in milk quality control systems. The aim of the study is to estimate the loss of milk production because of somatic cell count milk tank (RCST) in Manchego sheep flocks. From the RCST and milk production losses belonging to 103 sheep batches of milking, it has been calculated an equation of regression to estimate the milk production loss of livestock (PPL). From this equation is obtained PPL<8.71% in flock with RCST<500,000 cells / ml and PPL>12.24% in flock with RCST>1,500,000 cells / ml. The estimation of milk production losses due to intramammary infections should help to educate farmers, associations and government that it is necessary to develop and consolidate the programs concerning to prevention and control of breast health of the flock.
